How to save TikTok videos on a computer

Choose a folder, finish the transfer and open the saved file. This guide explains desktop browser downloads on Windows and Mac.

Browser instructions are based on the official documentation linked below. Menu labels can vary by browser and device.

Start with the right post and permission

Use a link to the particular video you want, rather than an account profile or a search page. Open the source to confirm that you selected the intended post. Keep only content you own or are authorized to save, and keep the original recording when it is your own work.

Decide whether you need moving video, audio or a still image. Those outputs are different. If you plan to edit a clip, think about the destination app and the file type it accepts before collecting several copies.

Follow the real file transfer

These steps apply to a real file returned by a supported tool. Wait for the browser transfer to finish, then check the saved file.

  1. Check the submitted post link and review the actual returned output. Choose video when you need picture and sound together.
  2. Select the genuine file action. If a save dialog appears, choose a folder you can find again and a useful filename.
  3. Watch the browser's transfer status. Avoid repeatedly clicking the button while a download is already in progress.
  4. Open the completed file, check playback and confirm that it is the intended recording before moving it into an editor or sharing it.

Find a file in Chrome

Open Chrome's menu and choose Downloads to view its download list. A completed entry can open the file or reveal it in its folder. Under Settings, then Downloads, you can change the destination or ask Chrome where to save each file.

Use the entry for the actual transfer rather than searching unrelated folders first. If you chose a custom destination for that download, check that location. A browser result page and the file saved on your computer are separate items.

Check Microsoft Edge's destination

Microsoft identifies the download folder in Edge under Settings and more, Settings, then Downloads. The path appears under Location. Check that setting when you do not know which folder the browser uses.

If you changed the destination since an earlier download, inspect the older file's location as well. For a project with several clips, choose a clearly named working folder and keep it separate from temporary downloads so the files remain easy to identify.

Find Safari downloads on a Mac

In Safari, the Show Downloads button opens the download list when it contains items. The magnifying-glass control beside a file helps locate it on the Mac. Safari's General settings include File download location if you need to check or change the destination.

Wait until a file finishes downloading before trying to use it. If you moved the file after saving it, look in the folder where you placed it; the browser's original location may no longer identify the current copy.

Check the output before calling it complete

A finished transfer is only part of the check. Open the file and confirm the beginning, end, sound and expected content. A filename containing HD does not independently verify resolution. A different extension does not change the format inside a file.

If the browser blocks the transfer, read its explanation. Chrome documents several reasons for download warnings, including dangerous or suspicious content. Keep browser protections enabled while you investigate; use the troubleshooting guide to separate a blocked transfer from an unavailable source.

Good questions, clear answers

Is the default folder always Downloads?

Check the browser's current setting. A default can be changed, and a save dialog may let you choose a different folder for an individual file.

What if my download does not start?

Read the result message first. Wait if a request limit is shown, or check the link again if file options expired. A saved file should appear in your browser’s download list. Device-specific saving behavior still needs checking on your phone or computer.

Can I use the downloaded file in an editor?

That depends on the actual file and the editor's supported formats. Test an authorized clip before building your work around it, and retain your original recording when available.
